Ciambrone Radiochemistry Lab
Airman 1st Class Mitchell Kirkpatrick, a measurements technician at the Ciambrone Radiochemistry Laboratory, Patrick AFB, Fla., carefully places a sample onto a gamma ray detector to check for radioactive debris from an environmental sample. The detector is made up of a 4-inch thick outer shell with a copper lining, which shields the sample and limits natural radioactivity and x-rays emitted from outside sources to prevent interference with low-level analysis.
